Werkpalast Lichtenberg: is an integrative and neighborly housing project with open space for housing and living.
The Werkpalast Lichtenberg is a former kindergarten in prefabricated construction (Plattenbau), which was converted by young Berliners into a neighborly open space for living and housing. At the same time, the intention was to prevent the object from speculation of land and real estate and ensure socially acceptable rents in the long term. The aim was achieved through the acquisition of the land by the trias foundation and the subsequent 99-year leasing contract to the cooperative SelbstBau e.G..
During the reconstruction, attention was paid to the ecological renewal and barrier-free living to accomplish intergenerational living. The structure of the residents is correspondingly diverse: seniors, families, singles and residential communities are living here in various sizes of accomodation and households. A big garden and an 80 m2 communal room are available for the community. From an ecological point of view, the conversion was carried out according to the KfW 70 requirements: this required triple glazing and appropriate insulation. The building also has a passive ventilation system, district heating, solar power and a rainwater infiltration system.
